I was reminded that you cannot take others where you, yourself have not gone. I encourage the author to stay with her process and write another book when she has completed her journey and is able to reflect.
We tend to share too early before we have distilled the experience. This is a typical self-help book, though, it is many hours of fluff and the authors own baggage of what they went through. The author paints codependency in a very black and white manner, and makes it seem like you had to have gone through major physical abuse to experience the symptoms of a codependency. They more or less spend most of the book talking about their personal experience, symptoms, beliefs, etc.
The book is advertised as a practical guide and claims to give you knowledge needed to overcome codependency, but is mostly just the authors own personal accounts, examples, stories, and not a lot of practical solutions, while being condescending enough to warn the reader that being lazy is just an excuse, its crazy to claim to really understand the mental mechanisms behind this disorder.
On the one hand the author states that there is a powerlessness behind these mental disorders, such that we don't CHOOSE to be codependent, or depressed. We want to develop insight, not be told that we are codependent because we are just lazy and choose to be. Also, the narration is absolutely horrid. I definitely believe in a higher power and pray to God everyday.
I do not go to church and I'm not religious. This book has helped me in so many ways and areas in my life. It has helped me look back to my past childhood and earlier life experiences to answer honest questions about myself and understand what codependency really is and how it has affected my life. I now use the tools and re-listen to this book over and over. I encourage anyone struggling with anything to read this book!
I would recommend this book for those who are searching for a way to heal themselves from codependency. This book is clear, easy to listen, real but lighthearted. Good for allowing reflection.
I believe I was the subject. Very helpful in my personal growth. Narrator was great! Really helped me on my journey of overcoming codependency. Religious section is the last section of the book which is helpful for those who are not. Goddy stuff might not be for you, diet advice is terrible, but otherwise a great book. Add to Cart failed.
